2 ETH grant to fund the 1st Phase of the Diablos Ecológicos SC Project for Carnaval DR 2023
The Diablos Ecológicos de San Cristóbal is a an ecological socio-cultural art project by Dominican Artist Luis Rivas. The project consists of bringing civic and ecological awareness and social inclusion to communities throughout the Dom Rep. In the months leading up to Carnaval, Luis travels the country inviting communities to participate in a series of cleanup/workshops where recycled materials such as used plastic containers and rubber parts ,including some of the materials from the actual cleanup are then turned into beautiful Carnaval Masks (Diablos) that then go on to participate together in the years Carnaval celebrations. The clean up and workshop events provide hands-on experience and education in environmental issues and an opportunity to participate in a positive way in the most important cultural event of the year.
Carnaval is the biggest cultural manifestation in the DR , with celebrations for an entire month all throughout the country leading up to the final Carnaval Parade ,usually on the 27th of February (National Independence Day).
Last year’s Pilot project was extremely successfully and was funded in its entirety by Luis Rivas himself. This year we hope to bring new life to the project by joining forces with the Nouns. Their community, characters, branding and culture are a perfect match for Luis’ vision of ecological awareness and social inclusion via Art and Culture and Carnaval is the perfect nationwide mass event to proliferate Nouns all throughout the country on a massive scale.
The Full scope of our idea is to be able to run at least two events a month with different community organizations leading up to the final February Carnaval to create an entire troupe of Diablos Ecológicos that will be a combination of traditional Diablos inspired by Nouns and Noun Characters in Carnaval Style and members from every participating community. This final group will participate together in the February Carnaval celebrations, bringing Nounish Ecology, Civic Duty and Social Inclusion to Carnaval 2023. We would like to document the entire process with a series of documentary style videos or film.
This first ask of 2 ETH is to run a pilot Nounified Event Cleanup/Workshop that will kickstart the season. We will use the nouns branded t-shirts, caps and event setup and will include as an integral part of the workshop and introductory educational class on Web 3 and all things Noun, and the Nouns community. For this event we will be working with Instituto Preparatorio de Menores SC, which is a very well respected reformation and correctional institute in the town of San Cristóbal. The institute has a 65 year history of working with children and young adults who are socially in situations of high risk. The event/workshop will take place in a local Beach near the Institute in San Cristobal that is in urgent need of sanitation.
The event is tentatively scheduled for October 1st, 2022. Inter-American Water Day. Celebrated for the promotion of responsable use of water resources.
The 2 ETH ask will cover:
Nouns Branded T-shirts and Baseball Caps, Noggles, Pins. Cleanup Bags and Protection Gloves. All recycled materials as well as Art supplies and Educational Support Materials.
Refreshments throughput the day, Lunch and Transportation to and from the location. Photographic and Video Documentation of the event.
